Legacy Center Planned to Honor Our Founding Members

We are proud to announce our plans for creating a Legacy Center in Janesville to commemorate the generations of local residents with lifelong careers dedicated to General Motors, Fisher Body, and the UAW. Blackhawk Community Credit Union is a banking cooperative that was originally founded on June 18, 1965, to provide financial services to the employees of Fisher Body, General Motors and the UAW. Today, we serve thousands of retirees, those that still have a long-distance commute from Janesville to another plant, and their families. “As the bulldozers arrive and demolition of the oldest General Motors plant begins just before its centennial, it’s more important than ever to ensure that the strong work ethic and iconic history of our community is honored,” said Mary Frederick, the credit union’s Board Chairperson. The Legacy Center is a part of Blackhawk Community Credit Union’s long-term strategic plans for the future. Artifacts and memorabilia from the plant have been secured

Stoughton Branch to Continue Serving Area

A few months ago, Blackhawk announced we would be consolidating our Stoughton branch into our Edgerton location. At that time, we were attempting to sell the building to another financial institution. "We considered multiple offers; however each one came with stipulations that I did not feel were good for our membership. I know that our members are loyal and committed to Blackhawk Community Credit Union, so we would not consider a move that would jeopardize our relationship with you," said Sherri Stumpf, CEO. After reviewing all of our immediate options and hearing your comments, we have decided to keep the branch open with a fresh approach and a number of operational changes. The change that will impact you directly is the branch schedule. We will operate our drive through Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm and our lobby from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.  As of May 1, 2014, we will be closed on Saturdays. If you should find yourself in a position where you need a special accommodation

Partnering with the Janesville School District for Financial Literacy

Blackhawk Community Credit Union was recently awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation to help offer web-based personal finance lessons to students in grades  K-12 in the Janesville School District. To help accomplish this goal, we purchased 10 iPads that serve as portable teaching devices. Each iPad includes 20 applications that we researched and selected to meet the needs of various grade levels on key financial topics and to appeal to student interests. This summer we have been designing lessons for students to use with the iPads to engage in financial learning and decision-making. Lessons will cover such areas as saving and wealth building, improving creditworthiness and budgeting. We are also training six of our student tellers to be Financial Literacy Student Ambassadors. They will serve as role models and leaders in their schools providing peer-to-peer financial education. With the partnership we established with the Janesville Schools, the District is now
