Mortgage Mail Scam

Mortgage Mail Scam

Have you recently received a postcard or letter claiming there is a time-sensitive issue or "important matter" regarding your mortgage that is urging you to call an unfamiliar phone number? If so, you’re not alone.

Scammers across the country are using publicly available records to target homeowners and attempt to collect personal and financial information.

These mailings did not come from Blackhawk Community Credit Union

Letters like the example shown below are not sent by Blackhawk Community Credit Union (BHCCU) or by your mortgage lender. These notices are designed to look official and may reference your lender by name, a loan amount, or a property detail to appear legitimate.

In many cases, recipients are asked to call a phone number regarding an “important matter” related to their loan. Unfortunately, these notices are often attempts to sell unnecessary products or, more seriously, to steal personal information and commit identity fraud.

Why do these letters look so real?

Some mortgage-related information is considered public record, regardless of which lender you work with. Scammers can access details such as:

  • Property purchases or transfers

  • Lien filings

  • County recording information

Using this public information, scammers create letters that appear credible and urgent to pressure recipients into responding.

You may notice small disclaimers on some mailings stating “Not Affiliated With” your lender—though in many cases, that disclosure may be missing or difficult to find.

What should you do if you receive one of these notices?

  • Do not call the phone number listed on the letter or postcard

  • Do not share personal or financial information

  • Disregard and dispose of the notice as you would any other junk mail

Calling the number may connect you with a live person or an automated recording, but either can lead to requests for sensitive information.

BHCCU is committed to protecting your information

Blackhawk Community Credit Union does not sell or distribute your personal information to non-affiliate third parties. Your privacy and security are a top priority.
